8th Pay Commission 2026 — Complete Guide

The 8th Pay Commission was approved in 2026 and is currently in the recommendation stage. While employee unions are demanding implementation from January 2026 with arrears, the government has not yet announced the final fitment factor or implementation timeline.

What is the Expected Fitment Factor?

Three fitment factor scenarios are being discussed for the 8th Pay Commission. The conservative estimate of 1.92× is based on DA merger only. The expected scenario of 2.28× reflects government projections. The optimistic scenario of 2.86× represents the NC-JCM Staff Side demand submitted in their memorandum.

When Will 8th Pay Commission Be Implemented?

Government employees are expecting implementation from January 2026, although the final recommendations and approval timeline are still awaited. If implementation happens later, eligible employees may receive arrears from the effective date announced by the government.

How Much Salary Increase Can Employees Expect?

Salary growth depends primarily on the final fitment factor. Under the widely discussed 2.28× scenario, the minimum basic pay could increase from ₹18,000 to approximately ₹41,000. Employees in higher pay levels may see significantly larger increases in revised basic pay and total monthly earnings after HRA and transport allowance are included.

How Are Arrears Calculated Under the 8th Pay Commission?

Arrears are calculated as the difference between your current salary and revised salary multiplied by the number of months between the effective date and actual implementation. The final arrear amount depends on pay level, fitment factor, HRA category, transport allowance and other salary components included in the revised pay structure.
